New Ladder Rack for the Flatbed

Recommended Posts

FINALLY had a chance to get a ladder rack on the truck this weekend. Being a 14' flatbed, there isn't anything out of the box which fits, so I designed it and had a fabricator weld it up. Had it made out of 2x4 box steel. It is total overkill. I am a fan of total overkill. Just need to coat it with POR15 and some hammerite...but the ladders are now easy. Gonna have the fabricator drop by and put on a few more hooks, etc. And no...we don't transport the big ladder sticking that far off the back...just had it on there for the pics.

Just have to get my sign up on the drivers side. We are dodging rain storms around here these days. Rain Rain Rain...Dry....CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN...Rain. Tis the season. Four clear days forecast so two big cedar roofs, a few small fry and a 5200 sq ft house with solar panel cleaning added on. Solar panel cleaning...I see another thread topic!

I love the way you used the tank for advertising Kevin!

I do to, is it vinyl just applied directly to the tank? Looks like a page taken out of the Chris Tucker playbook.. Lol.

Yup...just one big vinyl sticker. Had no practical way to put a sign on the back of my last truck and looking at some way to get advertising on the back it struck me that the tank was just sitting there, staring me in the face. So...

Got it painted today. Took me about 4 hours.Did some touch up while I was at it. You can never stop touching up your truck...keeps the rust away.

I will get the sign on the side of the truck as soon as the paint is fully cured. You might have also noticed the empty air reel. This is what happens when an employee drives off without the reel locked down.

Sigh.

Kevin, is it just me or does anyone else think it needs a bigger hose reel?  :)

Seriously though, when you do slide the ladder forward can you still get in and out of the passenger door? I definitely enjoy watching your build outs come to

life, I wish I was that mechanically inclined. Heck, I wish I was half that mechanically inclined..

OMG, so that's where all that hose on Interstate 5 came from huh :)  Who hasn't done that though, I know I have, once, 18 years ago.

That is my top of the line electric roof cleaning reel. Holds 400' of 3/4". No manifold to rust out, built like a tank. And yes...bigger ones ARE available...but I don't have enough width.

As for the rack...the 12' single section and 28' extension fit just fine and do not stick past the flatbed upright, so there are no issues opening the passenger door. The flatbed is 14 ft long so both are within that length. The longer 32 and 40' ladders we put up on top.

As for building the rigs...you just have to dive in and do it. Nothing is rocket science or beyond anybody with a modicum of skills, tools or knowledge. Mostly it is just common sense and trying to figure out the best ways to solve the problems we, as roof cleaners, have with our equipment and rigs. Find the things that annoy you, slow you down, or reduce productivity....solve them and impliment the change. I post the builds so that hopefully other guys who are having a particular problem or find themselves needing to build a rig or upgrade their current rig have something to refer to. Besides which...Got to have something to do during down times!
