How to remove mold from your roof without a pressure washer

Recommended Posts

The dark stains on roofs are caused by a type of algae called Gloeocapsa magma. ( A blue-green algae commonly found in area's with warm, humid summers ) This is the same algae that grows in our lakes and ponds in Michigan. It is believed that the spores of this algae become airborne and are carried to the roofs by the wind or birds. Once it lands on the roof it finds everything it needs to thrive and grow. Once they start to colonize, dark area's start appearing on the roof. This is a protective covering that is produced to help keep out the UV rays of the sun. These dark colonies on the roof will retain water that it get's from dew and rain which will foster the growth of moss and lichen.  The roofing manufacturers say to never use a pressure washer to clean a roof. Doing so will damage the shingles and lead to early failure. A soft wash method was developed years ago to help homeowners fight this ever growing problem. This method of cleaning has been perfected over the years and proven to be the only safe way to clean roofs today.  Because of the specialized equipment, and the dangers of working on a wet roof it is highly recommended that you have your roof cleaned by a professional.

The Roof Cleaning Institute of America (RCIA) has certified roof cleaners throughout the United States that have the knowledge, training, and years of experience to help homeowners with this ever growing problem.

We have times in the summer where the humisery runs close to 100%. We are in what is considered a humid continental climate. During the summer months our humidity is above 50%. If you are very close to Lake Michigan the humidity is not bad. The big lake has what is called a lake breeze that develops during the summer, and it plays a huge part in making the lake shore a wonderful place to be in the summer.
