Roof Cleaning Cape Cod and Massachusetts
A to Z Softwash posted a blog entry in Cedar Roof Cleaning in Cape Cod Massachusetts
A to Z Softwash is the most experienced roof cleaning company servicing Cape Cod, Southern mass, Rhode island, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard. All roof are cleaned without using a pressure washer! Growths such as lichen, moss, fungi, bacteria and algae are on most roofs these days. The first growth that shows its ugly head is typically bacteria (black streaks). Once this growths takes hold it will colonize and spread rapidly. Just like every other living thing, as it eats it excretes waste. This waste product is a food for other things..... such as moss and lichen! That is why when you see lichen in Southern Mass and Cape Cod it is usually growing right on top of the bacteria. It's an Algae party and your roof was invited. The only appropriate course of action is to hire your local roof cleaning company in Massachusetts that uses the proper methods. Which is of course a non pressure cleaning using the detergents that the shingle manufacturers recommend. Pressure washing, roof scrubbing and low pressure are terms and things you need to watch out for as those methods will damage your shingles. Another tip would be for you to ask for a copy of there insurance policy to be sure that you will be covered if god forbid something does go wrong. Asphalt shingles and cedar shingle roofs are going to have a short lifespan if they aren't clean, this is a fact. Insurance companies are even making people clean their roofs more and more. They are doing this because algae is costing them money! I haven't even mentioned the fact that dirty roofs are (forgive me for saying it) ugly. Take a look at some of our work below to see for yourself.- 2 comments

Have your ever had your cedar shake roof inspected? If it is five years or older, it is due for a checkup and cleaning. Just like our teeth, cedar must also be cleaned and maintained. A well maintained cedar shake roof should last 40 to 60 years. However, if it is not properly cleaned and maintained, the cedar shakes will eventually decay. Why Should You Care? Your cedar roof was expensive to install, will be expensive to repair and eventually will be even more expensive to replace. It’s in your best interest to maximize its useful life by scheduling a routine maintenance cleaning treatment before moss, lichen, mold, algae and fungi ruin your cedar roof. Does your roof have dark gray, black or greenish color like this house shown below? Is there moss growing on your roof like on this house? If so, deterioration has begun and must be addressed immediately. Just like a dentist appointment, putting it off will only lead to further decay until it is too late and a costly replacement is the only option. Fortunately the owners of this Naperville house called Advantage Roof Cleaning Company for their cedar roof cleaning before it was too late. Do we use power washing? No. Power washing relies upon brute pressure to clean a surface. Cedar is a soft wood and power washing can do more harm than good. Our roof treatment offers a “non-pressure” cleaning process which is designed specifically for cedar shake roofs. Our non-pressure cleaning process stopped the present deteriorating condition by removing the infestations. The cedar shake roof was returned to its intended functioning condition. No costly repairs or roof replacement was needed. Cost of treatment, in most cases, is less than 5% of the replacement cost! To read more, go here. To contact us, go here.

I am a fairly intuitive person, and I imagine that I might catch some flack for this post for one reason or the other. However, with moderators of the forum, and certain personal ties, this post might not last. I know that. But, being a paid member of this great roof cleaning network, I come here seeking the help of my fellow roof cleaning Brothers. I am in search of information pertaining to the proper cleaning methodology and solutions of which allow effective cleaning, without damaging the wood lignin, tannins, and moisture content of cedar shake roof shingles. For my peers that are so gracious, or "at liberty to discuss" this information, please reply, or PM me. I seek answers. I have a basic knowledge of wood cleaning and restoration, as I owned and operated a very successful business for 5 years, to put myself through college. I restored wood of all types, but as I understand it…there's a much more effective and less labor-intense method to cleaning cedar shake roofing. I am curious as to how those methods compare. (For those of you that are curious as to why I got out of the business…my career took off. Now, this business supports my family and another business venture) Cedar shake is an animal in and of itself, as is any wood. However, I know that it can be cleaned EFFECTIVELY…and I want answers Help a Brother out! Thanks guys.

Sullivan Roof Cleaning was chosen to clean the cedar roof on this 12 million dollar summer home in Charlevoix, Michigan. The great northern weather is harsh on a cedar roof. We just finished this cleaning May the 8th and had to work between the ever changing weather patterns this time of year. The attached photo is the front or lake side view but the whole roof was over 7,000 sq. ft. With the tree cover and overcast sky it is hard to get a good picture of the true results. The home owner was very pleased with the results and has asked us to schedule a maintenance program going forward. We are pleased this home owner decided to chose Sullivan Roof Cleaning over all the other service providers interviewed for this cedar roof cleaning service.

Here is an example of a 32 year old cedar shakes roof we just finished cleaning. Just goes to show age isn't the only factor to consider when it comes to replacing or not a cedar shakes roof. The home owner was told by a number of roofers their only option was to replace the roof given it's age. Clearly that was not the case. We cleaned it and replaced a few missing shakes from normal wear. Yes age is a factor but also consider installation, grade of shakes, surrounding tree cover, has it been cleaned before to name a few. The after pictures don't reflect the true result from our cleaning because of the angle of the sun at the time but do reflect this roof didn't need replacing, just a good cleaning. Don't let the age of your cedar shakes roof be the only determining factor in whether to replace or not! We will return in 6 to 8 years and clean this roof again.

Cedar Shake Roof Cleaning and Reconditioning Bellingham, WA
PeakOfPerfection posted a blog entry in PeakOfPerfection's Blog
We just finished another Cedar Shake Roof cleaning and restoration in Bellingham, WA. This 8000+ sq ft estate was cleaned, oiled and all debris removed by our crew over a multi day period to meet a tight escrow deadline. It was covered in pine needles and infested with black wood rot fungus, now removed using our non pressure Sullivan Cedar Cleaning System and safe compressed air. The results speak for themselves. Contact Kevin at Peak of Perfection Roof Cleaning for your Cedar Shake Roof Cleaning and restoration in Washington State. Before Cleaning and Conditioning. The cedar was black and full of pine needles and some moss. This property had two different aged roofs on it. Black Rot Fungus. This was after removing tons of pine needle debris using safe low pressure compressed air. After Cleaning and conditioning. Ready for many more years of service. Older section right after oiling. It will lighten up over the next week to a beautiful dark honey tone. Main Roof.- 2 comments

Don't let another roof installer ripped you off. Here are some photos of a roof we did recently in January of 2015. The homeowner was confronted with the idea of having his wood shakes roof replaced for about $15,000-$20,000, which is cheap for a cedar roof. He called us for a roof inspection and as you can see, these shakes are still in great condition. We use a soft wash, non pressure method and do not have to walk on your roof. We do our cleaning from a ladder. The solution we use has oil in it that works to dehydrate cedar shakes so that their flexibility is restored. Don't let anyone pressure wash your cedar roof. Call us before you call the roof installer. 252-314-8284, wjbrown1986@gmail.com Josh Brown, President Clean Pro Exteriors. The Five Things You Must Know Before Hiring A Cedar Roof Cleaner: Click Here My name is Josh Brown and I am the Cedar Shake Roof Cleaner for Rocky Mount North Carolina. I have been trained in the soft wash process of Cedar Roof Cleaning. Cedar needs to be cleaned every 5 to 10 years in order to maintain it's life span. Two things you should never do to a cedar roof is seal it or pressure wash it. If ever you hear someone mention any of those words, run the other way. If you have any questions concerning cedar roof maintenance we are here to help. And even if you do not live within our service area be sure to call us before letting just any cedar roof cleaner on top of your roof. We have recommendations of those trained in the soft wash process of cedar roofs all over the country. This picture and video was taken out of Rocky Mount North Carolina. This is the second roof we have cleaned in this neighborhood. The homeowner raved about how it looked new and her neighbors thought she had a new roof put on. Though it was heavily infested with lichen and moss and appeared to need replacing, it actually only needed a cleaning. Cedar roofs naturally preserve on their own but with infestations such as these, the cedar will begin to deteriorate causing a very expensive premature roof replacement. However if the problem is caught in time and the shakes still have their integrity, they can be cleaned and maintained for many more years to come. Typically this can be done for less than 5% of the replacement cost. Before replacing your roof give me a call and I'll give your roof an inspection to see if it is a candidate for a cleaning. We will never clean a roof that is beyond saving. This would be no benefit to our company, and certainly not to any homeowner. We are here for you if you have any questions and the homeowner of this roof will be happy to provide for you a reference if needed. Josh Brown Clean Pro Exteriors, President.

I have noticed that many trying to clean cedar haven't considered the factor of tannin. Cedar is among a group of woods ( like Cyprus, Redwood and Mahogany) that have a natural acidic chemical called tannin which is caused by moisture in the wood. Tannin is water-soluble. Here is a cedar roof we just cleaned that had a lot of tannin, combined with brown rot fungi and other infestations. What many miss is the proper cleaning of tannin and when the roof dries from a cleaning it will look like a checker board. On a cedar roof the tannin will have a black look to it. In most cases some section will have it and some won't because of the moisture content of the cedar roof. When cleaning cedar roofs always consider tannin and the removal of for the best results.

Many of the cedar roofs we are asked to inspect and clean show signs of neglect from lack of proper maintenance. One case in point is not keeping the valleys clean of debris. As I have said many times before, cedar on its own will not decay. It takes some form of moisture combined with different infestations to decay cedar. In the above photo example, this was a roof we cleaned in Omaha, Nebraska. As you can see in the photo the valleys were full of debris. Once we cleaned out the debris there was damage to the shakes and the underlining felt. The felt protects the roof and the shakes protect the felt. This section had to be replaced/repaired. Proper cedar roof maintenance requires the yearly cleaning of the roof valleys which could be done at the same time your gutters are cleaned. Cedar shakes need to stay dry in order to function properly and to reach their full potential life span. Also it is important to keep all tree cover cut back from the cedar roof. Tree cover provides too much shade and moisture which doesn’t allow the cedar roof to breathe and stay dry. Also a cedar roof should have a cleaning every six to eight years, which is subjective. Yearly maintenance of your cedar roof will go a long ways to extending the life span of your roof. This is just being pro-active and will save you from a premature roof replacement. So keep the valleys clean of debris, keep any tree cover cut back and have a routine cleaning schedule in place and your cedar roof will last decades.

This is a cleaning we just finished in the Glen Oaks area of West Des Moines, Iowa. We also replaced some damaged shakes. I have added another ingredient to my cleaning solution that has improved it greatly. I don't often post pictures, though I have many examples. Just wanted to show an example of our soft wash cleaning cedar process.

Sullivan Roof Cleaning, Inc. is location in the Des Moines, Iowa area. We also service the greater Midwest i.e. IA, NE, MI, ID, OH, IL, MN, MO, WI, KS. We have a network of cedar cleaners throughout the Midwest that have been personally trained in the cedar roof cleaning process. Each network member meets the high standards of service and professionalism. Sullivan Roof Cleaning themselves clean about 100 to 150 cedar shakes roofs a season. There is a difference between someone that cleans cedar and cedar cleaners. We are cedar cleaners. Our service focuses solely on roof cleaning, though we have cleaned the house or a deck at the roof cleaning customers request but only if they are a roof cleaning customer. Over the years we have focused on roof cleaning and cedar roof cleaning being our specialty. We have developed our own cleaning solution, our own cleaning process, etc. for more details of our service go to www.cedarroofclean.com watch the videos, visit the photos and the customer reviews. As a cedar roof cleaning contractor and service provider we have seen way to many cedar shakes home owners replace their cedar roof prematurely. Just because it looks bad doesn't mean it is bad! Most home owners were never told that cedar shakes have to be maintained. It is akin to having your teeth cleaned. Your teeth are organic and need to be maintained to reach their full life span. Cedar shakes are organic also and need to be maintained in order to reach their full life span. It makes common sense when you think about it. With todays cedar roofs, the underlining or what we call roof felt is the water barrier and the shakes protect the felt. As long as you keep the shakes healthy the felt will stay healthy. It is the algae, moss, mold, mildew, lichen and fungi e.g. white & brown rot fungi that cause the deterioration. Cedar on it's own will not decay. It is through these infestations, combined with moisture that causes the cedar shakes to deteriorate. Remove these infestations and you stop further deterioration. A good and proper cedar roof cleaning should last about 6 to 8 years subjectively. The good part is in most cases for less than 5% of the replacement cost you can have your cedar roof cleaned. Before you consider having your cedar roof replaced consider first the option of having it cleaned. Though we or our network members will not clean a cedar roof that is in need of major repair or replacement! Unlike a roofer who wants to replace your cedar roof, we want your cedar roof to last many more years, that's our service and besides we want to come back in 6 to 8 years and clean it again. So yes we have an ulterior motive to want to clean your cedar roof. So contact us today about having your cedar roof cleaned and extending it's life span.
