Hi, I have been thinking about using compressed air to blow the moss off of roofs instead of the way we currently do it which is by scraping the moss out of the joints in the tiles and then treating the roof with biocide to kill the moss and lichen spores. Is it possible and if so what kind of psi would I need to do this?

What is it that a client gets when they hire a professional roof cleaner? Some people say, "it's just spraying bleach on a roof", and they're wrong before the words even leave their mouth. Sodium hypochlorite breaks down rapidly in the sunlight, and this actually helps the oxidation and roof cleaning process. It also helps remove the strength from the formula during cleaning, which can help with protecting landscaping. There has always been a big debate whether a cleaned roof should be rinsed, or not. Remember, we are not cleaning a roof with Acid! Acid basically keeps working, unless it is rinsed well and/or neutralized. Not so with SH. The SH hits the organic matter, and the hypochlorite ION forms. This ION goes through a battle with the organic matter (algae) on the shingles, and this battle pretty much weakens the SH so much, no Hypochlorite ION is left. Sort of like the way Peroxide burns on a cut for awhile, then fizzes out. However, what is left behind after the reaction between SH and organic matter is a form of salt. Salt will mess up plants. This is why we rinse a roof, at least partially, if no gutters are present. My roof cleaners are taught at the RCIA to rinse the bottom 1/3 of the roof, from the ground, and then rinse this run off off the plants. Experience has shown this will prevent 90% of any run off problems.

ARMA methods of roof cleaning are one big Joke. Any roof cleaner knows the so called ARMA Method will never clean a roof. It calls for diluted bleach, so if 5% straight bleach will not clean a roof, how will diluted bleach ? And, make no mistake, ARMA is talking about store bought bleach, NOT 12.5 % SH. THE best neutralization for SH is water, and lots of it. Forget about so called "Chlorine Neutralizers". For one thing, they dont neutralize the salt in the SH, and secondly, to properly neutralize chlorine, you must first know the exact amount of chlorine you are trying to neutralize, to add an exact amount of one chemical, to cancel out the other. Too little neutralization chemical, and it don't do shit, too much of the neutralization chemical, you have just introduced another chemical into the landscaping and the environment. Dilution is the solution to pollution, nothing beats plenty of water. In our company, the ground man is the Boss! If he says to slow down because the run off is overwhelming him,, the roof guy stops. Good communication between the roof and ground guy is essential. You cant have a hyper out of control guy up on a roof, who sprays at will, and wanders from one side of the roof to another, and we will not keep a chicken shit roof man, who wants to stay near the top of a roof, and flood a side of the roof, because he is too chicken shit to walk down the roof, to control his run off. So we had another harness save. My main roof guy was coming down from a roof and his ground man had just come down off the ladder on a 2 story house. When the ground man came off the ladder, he shifted it. As soon as my roof man stepped into the ladder, it went out from under him. He fell about 5 feet and was stopped up short by his fall arrest system attached to the safety anchor they had just installed (my guys are trained to be harnessed until their feet are on the ground. He was able to lower himself down using the descender we invested in. The next day he was sore and bruised up from the harness taking the impact, but it was FAR better than the alternative of hitting the concrete from 2 stories up. Guys...it is REALLY easy to become complacent. It is really easy to think you are never going to fall from a roof. We received a call from an owner of a home in Bellingham WA, wondering if there was anything that could be done for his cedar shake roof. Honestly, upon first glance, even we were dubious.
