Here is an example of a 32 year old cedar shakes roof we just finished cleaning. Just goes to show age isn't the only factor to consider when it comes to replacing or not a cedar shakes roof. The home owner was told by a number of roofers their only option was to replace the roof given it's age. Clearly that was not the case. We cleaned it and replaced a few missing shakes from normal wear. Yes age is a factor but also consider installation, grade of shakes, surrounding tree cover, has it been cleaned before to name a few. The after pictures don't reflect the true result from our cleaning because of the angle of the sun at the time but do reflect this roof didn't need replacing, just a good cleaning. Summer of 2014 brought about great change in my life as I launched my rather unexpected pressure washing business. It's been a journey and have loved every minute of it. What an exciting opportunity. Thanks to a very good repeat customer, Ultrasoft Pressure Washing LLC had the opportunity to show off our roof cleaning skills on a very dirty slate roof. Slate roof cleaning is pretty straight forward, much like tile roof cleaning, but not every case is the same. Today we cleaned a roof that (as far as is known) hasn't had any treatment or cleaning for over 40 years! On a beautiful historic home in the lovely San Marco area of Jacksonville, Florida was one nasty slate roof. Our slate roof cleaning included the same kind of steps we perform on many other roofs. Apply our proprietary roof cleaning solution, while protecting all plants and vegetation, and restore the roof to it's original color. In this case, getting a perfect restoration will take a little while. Numerous coats of our cleaning solution were required to break through the 40+ year layer of growth on the roof. Although cleaned and ready to go, this roof will take a while to reach 100% potential. When buildup is over 40 years old, 1/8" thick, and never been touched, it will take a while for the remaining residue to break down and wash off of the roof with sun and rain. The roof will look amazing after a little time. It took for years to build up, and it could take a few months for all of the debris to wash off. This slate roof cleaning was one of the most challenging we have ever done, but one thing is for sure. If we can safely clean over 40 years of organic growth and buildup from a slate roof. This 8000+ sq ft estate was cleaned, oiled and all debris removed by our crew over a multi day period to meet a tight escrow deadline. It was covered in pine needles and infested with black wood rot fungus, now removed using our non pressure Sullivan Cedar Cleaning System and safe compressed air. The results speak for themselves. Don't replace your roof "Clean It!" The black ugly roof stains is an algae. I have been cleaning homes in the Cary & Raleigh area with black ugly roofs. It is destroying your roof. Insurance companies are starting to deny coverage if your roof has this algae, lichen or moss on your roof. They are making home owners clean their roofs for for good reason NEVER allow someone to get on your roof and pressure wash the shingles. A low pressure chemical should be applied to kill the algae and clean the roof. If rinsing is desired a pressure similar to your garden hose pressure should only be used.
